Weissbier, 5%

A fairly standard Bavarian weissbier. Cloudy with a fine white head. Plenty of aromas, with the classic banana and clove flavours that you’d expect from the style. Sadly this beer just doesn’t have anything punchy in the flavour. It’s fruity enough, but there’s no sourness to keep it fresh, and the whole effect just falls flat. The aftertaste is somewhat sweet, but doesn’t sparkle.

Gooseberry & Wheat ale, 5%

Site: http://www.williamsbrosbrew.com/beerboard/bottles/grozet

A mildly fruited wheat beer, low carbonation and a pale golden colour. The fruit flavours in this are quite subdued, only really coming in the early aroma, before being dominated by the sourness of the beer and the bittering hop. Otherwise the early flavour is not particularly crisp, but is fairly easy to drink. Not an extraordinary beer, but I’d be willing to have it again.

Belgian Style White, 5.4%

An american take on a belgian witbier. Cloudy and slightly yellow, with little head retention. Aroma is true to style, with fruity flavours which are more fully pronounced in the early flavour. Plenty of banana and orange flavours, with sweetness and acidity quite gently balanced. Hop is lightly done, but still present. The mouth feel is fairly light and round, with carbonation making a definite contribution. Malty flavours are understated, leaving the fruity aroma to dominate.  Aftertaste is slightly sour, but not particularly lingering. Overall this is a perfectly pleasant beer,  a good interpretation of the style, and I’d be happy to have it again.

Witbier, 5.1%

Comments: A cloudy straw coloured beer, with fine head but no retention (as expected for a wheat beer). Quite a sweet flavour, with most of the character coming from the wheat  – some passionfruit aromas but no banana. A slightly peppery aftertaste, but little mouth feel. Not unpleasant, but certainly not the height of American brewing.

Bière blanche de froment (White Wheat beer), 4%

Comments: A very pale wheat beer, in a similar style to Hoegaarden. A fine white head but very little retention. Light in flavour, even for the style, this beer the sweetness that one might expect, but doesn’t manage to have the aromatics that make this style work. Some citrus characteristics, but not enough to entice me to look out for this again.
